💰 Salary negotiation tactics

What is your expected salary?

Negotiation on the salary could be and is a truly dreading process to some. Below is the script that I’ve personally used and collected over the years.

Scenario: Screening interview

RECRUITER
Hi Faidzal, may I know what is your expected salary or compensation?

YOU
Hi James, thank you for asking that question. I don’t think I’m comfortable sharing with you my current compensation yet and I haven’t actually given much thought yet on what the expected salary will look like.

YOU
Would you share on the why or motivation behind knowing my current compensation so that I could understand a little bit more?

RECRUITER
The reason why I’m asking is because I want to make sure that your profile fits accordingly to the role and it’ll help us to understand you better. Even a rough figure would be really helpful to expedite the process.

YOU
Honestly speaking, compensation is not my driving factor, I rather make sure the role, company value, and direction. I’d rather discuss the compensation later down the road.

YOU
Would you mind sharing what would be the budget or a range for this role?

YOU
Thank you for sharing the range. I’m still doing market research still for this role as I’d like to ensure that we both we’ll be in win-win situation. It’s important I think for us to have that balance.

YOU
It’s a little bit tricky for me to give the expected figure due to as I don’t want to shoot over your budget

Thank you for dropping by

If in anyway you feel this how-to useful I’d welcome any contribution.

Scenario: Receive verbal offer

RECRUITER
I have great news to share with you. We’d like to offer you RM5,000 per month as for your basic salary. I think this is a really great competitive offer for your role.

YOU
Thank you so much for the offer! This is such big great news to me as I’m excited about the opportunity.

YOU
May I ask few questions regarding the total package of the offer?

How would you suggest the structure for the performance bonus?

YOU
I have a few last questions regarding benefits if you don’t mind me asking.
Example:
– EPF contribution,
– General benefits like medical, optical, dental

YOU
What are the other benefits that will be offered?
Example:
– Gym, meal allowance,

YOU
May I have 1 or 2 weeks to process this?

RECRUITER
1 week sounds a long time for us and we need to move fast. We kinda need an answer within 3 days time. Or is there anything wrong with the offer that I can quickly address?

YOU
Thank you for sharing timeframe for me to think this over. The offer is good, however, I think I’d definitely appreciate if I could have a week or two to think this through. Again, I’m really excited about this offer and I just want to make sure to allow a little bit time to process this and chat with my partner/family/mentor. As the way I look at it I want to commit a long time with the company.

RECRUITER
I understand all that, however, due to the nature for this role (and it’s a hot seat) it’s crucially important for us to move fast.

YOU
If that’s the case, would it be possible if I could ask a short chat with the hiring manager as I’d like to understand just a little bit more around the role, expectation or the potential career growth with the company – essentially to the role?

PRO-TIP
By asking Recruiter to arrange a chat with hiring manager would allow you to buy some time and ask for deeper clarity on the role. Also potentially for you to increase the offer.

YOU
Also, may ask if you could send me an offer letter so that I could review the offer properly as well as the terms. Looking at the details certainly helps me to make better decision and bring more clarity.

PRO-TIP
Having a written offer letter would help you to look at the clarity and potential versus with the other offer (if you have multiple offers in hands).

RECRUITER
I don’t think I’m able to issue you a formal offer letter just yet. Once or if you’re ok to proceed with the given offer, I’d be more than happy to generate. I can perhaps repeat back the offer and you may jot it down.

PRO-TIP
Most of the reason why Recruiter/HR is reluctant to issue the offer letter yet is due to you might leverage the offer to other company.

However, you have 2 options to get it in a written manner.

PRO-TIP
Think of this situation: Aside yourself, who among your family member that you feel is truly a hardworking person. It could be your partner/husband/wife. Now, imagine that you’re fighting for that person. For sure you want the best for them, isn’t it?

By imagining you’re fighting for someone that you care, would create higher chances for you to be more confident and focus.

YOU
Option 1: After the call, send via email and write the offer that you jotted down earlier – ask Recruiter/HR to confirm.

Option 2: Ask Recruiter/HR to write down via email.
